TL;DR. A surf shop repair shelf needs four tiers: impulse-priced resin tubes around $7.90 for counter display, complete kits for the customer who wants everything in one box, board-type-specific options covering both epoxy/EPS and polyester/PU builds, and consumables for local repairers. Lead the range with a universal resin so staff never have to diagnose a board they cannot see.

How Ding Repair Actually Sells in a Shop

Ding repair is an impulse and emergency category β€” the customer has already found the damage and needs an answer before they lose a session.

By the time someone reaches the shelf, the decision is essentially made: they need a fix, they need it now, and they are often still in the parking lot mentally. There is no browsing phase, no comparison shopping, no return visit to think it over. The shelf has to do the selling in about three seconds β€” board type, repair type, done. Clear labeling and a small, tidy footprint matter more here than they do almost anywhere else in the shop.

That shelf serves two distinct riders. Surfers and SUP/paddleboard riders both crack rails, ding noses, and gouge decks, and both walk into the same shop looking for the same fast answer. A display that speaks to both β€” without making either group hunt β€” captures the full demand that walks through the door.

Phix Doctor manufactures its own surfboard and paddleboard repair products, which means the shop is buying factory-direct through the supply chain rather than through a middleman who repackages someone else's formula. That matters for margin and for consistency: what is on the shelf is exactly what the manufacturer intended, not a rebranded approximation.

Stock for the emergency buyer

The customer who finds a ding on a Friday afternoon is not coming back Saturday to buy the product they should have grabbed. If the SKU they need is out, the sale is gone β€” not delayed.

The Four Tiers Every Repair Shelf Should Cover

A well-built repair shelf runs four tiers: impulse grab-and-go, complete mid-range kits, board-type-specific kits, and bulk/consumable stock for local repairers. Cover all four and you capture every customer who walks in β€” from the grom with a $10 bill to the shop tech restocking their bench.

Tier 1 β€” Impulse ($7.90–$9.60)

Three SKUs live at the counter and drive repeat traffic.

The MONDO Dura Resin UV Filler Ding Repair Tube and the Super Mini SunPowered Dura Resin Fiberfill Kit are both $7.90, both airline-approved, and both safe on epoxy and polyester boards β€” staff can hand either to any customer without asking what board they ride. The MONDO is a 2 oz tube; the Super Mini carries 1 fl oz. Both cure in sunlight in about a minute under a clear cover sheet, clean up with soap and water, and carry an endless shelf life guarantee, which means zero markdown risk for you.

The Drifter 10+1 Travel Ding Kit at $9.60 adds one piece that the tube-only products don't include: a 2"Γ—3" marine-grade dry-lock ding tape for a field fix before a proper repair is possible. Position it as the travel-ready upgrade β€” enough resin for 10 average dings plus the tape for the one that can't wait.

Tier 2 β€” Complete Kits ($19.90–$28.00)

Customers who want everything in one box, and customers who can't count on sunshine, both land here.

The SunPowered Epoxy/Poly Repair Kit UNIVERSAL at $19.90 is the workhorse: fiberglass, q-cell, dual-grit sand pad, gloves, and instructions in 7 languages, all in a biodegradable box. It works on both EPS and PU cores, so it's the right default recommendation whenever board type is uncertain.

The SUP/Paddleboard Repair Kit at $27.90 is built specifically for the paddleboard customer β€” it includes a 7Γ—13 in sheet of 4 oz e-glass, q-cell, mix cups, gloves, smoothy sheets, and the same universal UV resin safe on styrofoam cores, with a 2-minute sun cure. Face it toward your SUP wall or rental desk.

The SunPowered Dura Resin Combo W/UV Light at $28.00 solves the one situation UV resins can't handle on their own: no sun. The kit bundles a UV curing light with a 1 fl oz tube of Dura Resin, dual-grit sand pad, mix sticks, and smoothy sheets. It's the answer for dawn patrol surfers and anyone repairing indoors.

Tier 3 β€” Board-Type Kits ($14.80)

Polyester resin and EPS foam do not mix

Neither polyester kit in this tier is safe on EPS/styrofoam cores. Polyester resin must never contact the foam directly β€” stock these for confirmed PU-board customers only, and default to the universal kit from Tier 2 whenever board type is unknown.

When a customer confirms they ride a polyester/PU board, two options sit at the same $14.80 price point.

The SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit uses premium Silmar sanding resin and cures in sunlight. It includes q-cell, gloves, dual-grit sand pad, smoothy sheets, mix cups, mix sticks, a 7Γ—13 in sheet of 4 oz e-glass, and instructions in 7 languages. Shelf life is 8 months, so turn this section regularly.

The Polyester Repair Kit at the same $14.80 uses Silmar resin with a catalyst hardener β€” no sun required. It carries the same contents list and is the right pick for shops whose customers prefer a chemical cure or work in covered areas. Same EPS warning applies.

Tier 4 β€” Consumables and Repairer Stock ($13.50–$39.90)

This tier serves the local repairer, surf school, or rental fleet operator who supplies their own cloth and works in volume.

The SunPowered Universal Resin Half Pint at $39.90 delivers 240 ml of solvent-free, non-yellowing UV resin safe on both EPS and PU cores. It has surpassed 4 years of storage in a hot car β€” a meaningful spec for a repairer who bu

Choosing the Right Resin for the Board in Front of You

The single most important variable in any repair is whether the board has an EPS foam core or a polyurethane (PU) foam core β€” get that wrong and the resin can dissolve the foam before the repair even cures.

How to tell the two apart: crack open the ding and look at the foam. EPS is the white, grainy, bead-like foam β€” the same material as a picnic cooler. PU is denser and closed-cell, with a smoother texture. That visual check is usually enough.

Why it matters chemically: polyester resin carries styrene monomer as a solvent β€” it is named on the label, including a California Proposition 65 warning on both the SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit and the Polyester Repair Kit. Styrene dissolves EPS foam on contact. Universal and Dura Resin products are solvent-free, which is precisely what makes them safe on EPS.

Polyester on EPS is irreversible damage

Never allow polyester resin to contact an EPS (styrofoam) core. Even brief contact will melt the foam, turning a surface ding into a structural problem.

Decision Tree

What construction is the board in front of you?
  • Polyester kits are appropriate; the SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit or Polyester Repair Kit will work.Board has a PU (dense, smooth) foam core
  • Use a universal or Dura Resin product only; the SunPowered Epoxy/Poly Repair Kit is the go-to.Board has an EPS (white, grainy) foam core
  • The SUP/Paddleboard Repair Kit is formulated safe on styrofoam cores and cures in 2 minutes in the sun.Board is a SUP or paddleboard with an EPS core
  • Default to the SunPowered Universal Resin; it is solvent-free and explicitly rated safe on both EPS and PU cores.Customer cannot identify the core material

The One Thing Every Counter Staff Member Must Know About Resin and Foam

Polyester resin dissolves EPS foam β€” and if a customer uses the wrong product on the wrong board, the damage happens fast and cannot be undone.

The chemistry in plain terms. Polyester resin contains styrene monomer. Styrene is a solvent, and it attacks expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam on contact. Both the SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit and the Polyester Repair Kit carry a California Proposition 65 warning stating the product "can expose you to chemicals including STYRENE MONOMER, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer." That warning is on the label for a reason β€” and the same chemical that triggers the health notice is the one that eats the foam core.

The board identification rule. A customer needs to know whether their board has a polyurethane (PU) core or an EPS core before they buy polyester resin. The product itself is direct: "This product is not for use on EPS/Styrofoam cores commonly used in Epoxy boards." The Polyester Repair Kit goes further: "polyester resin is not compatible with styrofoam core boards … we advise to never allow this resin to be in contact with styrofoam (EPS) cores."

If the customer is unsure, sell them the universal resin. When a customer cannot identify their core material with confidence, do not guess β€” reach for a universal or Dura Resin product instead. These are solvent-free and explicitly safe on both EPS and polyurethane cores.

When in doubt, go universal

A customer who is unsure of their board construction should never leave with polyester resin. One application on an EPS core can destroy the foam before the repair is even finished.

Handling reminder. Polyester resin should be used with gloves and in a ventilated area. Both kits include gloves for this reason.

How to Get Phix Doctor Stock for Your Shop

Phix Doctor manufactures its own surfboard and paddleboard repair products, and most shops source them through their existing surf distributor β€” that's the normal route and the one worth checking first.

If your current distributor doesn't carry Phix Doctor, or you're unsure who the right contact is for your region, reach out directly at phixdoctor.com. The team can point you toward the appropriate channel without any need to go around your existing supply relationships.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stock just one repair resin and use it for all boards?

Yes, if you choose a universal resin. The SunPowered Universal Resin and the Dura Resin range are both described as safe on EPS/epoxy and polyurethane/polyester boards. Polyester resin is not a universal option β€” it must not contact EPS foam cores, so stocking only a polyester product leaves epoxy-board customers without a safe solution.

Why can't polyester resin go on an EPS surfboard?

Polyester resin contains styrene monomer β€” named on the product label under California Proposition 65 β€” and styrene dissolves EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam. Phix Doctor states directly on its polyester kit listings that the product is not for use on EPS/Styrofoam cores. If board construction is unknown, the universal resin is the safe default.

What is the difference between the SunPowered Epoxy/Poly Repair Kit and the SunPowered Universal Resin Half Pint?

The SunPowered Epoxy/Poly Repair Kit ($19.90) is a complete kit including resin, q-cell, dual grit sand pad, gloves, fiberglass, mix cups, mix sticks, smoothy sheets, and instructions in seven languages. The SunPowered Universal Resin Half Pint ($39.90) is a 240ml bottle of resin on its own, suited to a local repairer who already has cloth and tools.

Which Phix Doctor products are described as airline approved?

Phix Doctor describes the following products as airline approved on their own listings: the MONDO Dura Resin UV Filler Ding Repair Tube, the Super Mini SunPowered Dura Resin Fiberfill Kit, the Zero G Universal UV Foam Filler, The Drifter 10+1 Travel Ding Kit, and the SunPowered Epoxy/Poly Repair Kit. This is the manufacturer's description; travelers should confirm with their carrier before flying.

Does ding tape work as a permanent repair?

No. Phix Doctor describes its ding tape as instant relief to protect the board from water damage until a proper repair can be done β€” it is a temporary measure, not a permanent fix. The SUP Pack Ding Tape is marine grade, UV resistant, and waterproof, making it a useful counter add-on for customers who need to get through a session before doing a full repair.
