Kit contents are comparable: resin, hardener, q-cell, gloves, fiberglass, sand pad, smoothy sheets, mix cups, mix sticks, and 7-language instructions. Also not for EPS cores, polyester resin dissolves EPS foam.

The One Thing Every Staff Member Must Know: Polyester Resin and EPS Foam

Polyester resin dissolves EPS foam, and that single fact is the most important thing a Saturday employee needs to carry onto the shop floor.

Know the two constructions. Hard boards come in two common builds: an EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam core laminated with epoxy resin, or a polyurethane (PU) foam core laminated with polyester resin. EPS is easy to spot once you know it: it's the white, grainy foam that looks exactly like a picnic cooler. Which core a board has determines which resin can legally touch it.

Why polyester and EPS cannot meet. Polyester resin carries styrene as a solvent, not an inference, but a named ingredient. Both the SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit and the Polyester Repair Kit carry a California Proposition 65 warning stating the product "can expose you to chemicals including STYRENE MONOMER, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer." Styrene is what eats EPS. The SunPowered Polyester Repair Kit states it plainly: "This product is not for use on EPS/Styrofoam cores commonly used in Epoxy boards." The Polyester Repair Kit is equally direct: "polyester resin is not compatible with styrofoam core boards… we advise to never allow this resin to be in contact with styrofoam (EPS) cores."

The default rule when the customer doesn't know. If a customer cannot identify their core, and most recreational surfers cannot, sell them a universal. The SunPowered Universal Resin is "Solvent Free… Safe on delicate Epoxy/EPS, and Polyurethane Foam Core Boards." Dura Resin is equally clear: "Dura Resin is Safe for delicate, ultra light styrofoam cores as well as the old standard polyurethane board cores." A solvent-free universal removes the diagnosis entirely, which is exactly the point when the employee making the sale has been on the floor for three hours.
